I Can Do Bad All By Myself

I was thrilled to see that three readers the majority of you wanted me to see Tyler Perry's latest movie, starring Tyler Perry, Tyler Perry and Tyler Perry. Not counting the 9 lovers who weighed in too late.

Actually, this movie surprised me in a good way, and disappointed in a good way too.

ICDBABM (I Can Do Bad All By Myself) was much more redeeming than the last couple of Tyler Perry's movies. Even though they all have a moral lesson, some take the long way home, if you know what I mean. This time Madea didn't commit any crimes....actually she was the victim of a crime.

In the middle of her nightly slumber, these three siblings broke into her home and were caught red handed stealing things that included Joe's original VCR circa 1975. Rather than call the police or shank them, as threatened, she fed them and told them they would work off there punishment at a later date....then she attempted to take them home.

The two brothers and their older sister live with their maternal grandmother who they hadn't seen in four days, so Madea takes them to their Aunt April's (Taraji P. Henson) place. Aunt April is an alcoholic lounge singer, living in the home her father left her, and in need of major repair work. April's life is upside down with her live-in married boyfriend, Raymond, who hates kids. Bottom line, April doesn't want the kids there.

Along comes Sandino (Adam Rodriguez), an immigrant handyman from Mexico, and a friend of the local pastor (real-life pastor and gospel great Marvin Winans) from his missionary days. He offers to fix the place up in exchange for a place to stay. April begrudgingly lets him stay in the basement.

Sandino is a ray of sunshine and optimism in the life of the children and April. But April is a hard sell.

The movie has some great musical numbers, and a few from Gladys Knight who plays a woman from the local church. I found this Tyler Perry movie inspiring with more than the usual moral lessons.

The Madea Moment for me was when she discovered Jennifer sitting on her porch crying. She tried to teach her how to pray, and told her a bible story that had me laughing so hard....but the interaction was tender, and a reminder from Madea that prayer is really just a conversation with God. I loved this movie!

I give it four and a half stars.

That is a great review : ) I agree, some of the last ones took WAY TOO LONG to get to the point. I can't wait to see this now.

So, I have to tell you. This morning when I read your comment I got a little annoyed at you. I deleted it in my email. And then I got up and got a frozen bananna feeling kind of mad.

And then I sat down at the kitchen table and started thinking and you are right. I really do have to get over it. I mean, it is happening wether I like it or not. And the truth is, he is having a great childhood.

It is just so hard to think that soon he will be grown and he won't need me any more. And maybe (definitely) what I am scared of iis that I won't have him any more because you know, sometimes I think I need him WAY more than he needs me. And then of course I feel terrible because I am sure that is a horrible way to be parenting.

So basically, thank you for leaving me that comment because you made me look hard and examine some things and I am grateful for that.

And I probably should have sent you this as an email instead of a 9 page comment.

You inspire me. And you definitely help me be a better Mom and better person.

To Rebeckah...Oh no, I'm so sorry if I sounded harsh. My comment to you was tongue in cheek. Since I'm a whole lot older (and fatter) than you I can tell you that today is the youngest you and Kaishon will ever be...so, enjoy today because the tomorrows keep coming. Our kids grow up fast, but each age has it's own wonders and joys. I don't want you to miss them by looking in your rear view mirror. I love you guys, but I am flawed, and I never ever want to offend. AMEN
