Ten Kids Too Many

Grandma J loves making fleece no-sew blankets for the kids in the Peds Onc ward at the hospital.  Last year it was Dell Children's Hospital in Austin, Texas. The year before it was Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas.   This year she is bringing them to Scott and White Hospital again.

She only made ten blankets this year.   Well actually, this year she made five more for her own Grandkids who had put in special orders.   But seriously, there are more than ten kids in this cancer ward for Christmas.   No child should be in the hospital on Christmas.  Actually, no child should have cancer!  Wouldn't it be wonderful if someday Grandma J called the Child Life Specialist on the cancer ward and she told Grandma J that they don't need any blankets because they didn't have any kids with cancer?

So, since she only had ten blankets,  Grandma J decided to give gift cards to four moms.  She will let the Child Life Director hand them out.....those people are the best at determining people's needs!

The Child Life Director is meeting Grandma J tomorrow morning.  And Grandma J is super excited because the director remembered Grandma J from two years ago!

I'm telling you.....when someone that important says they remember Grandma J it almost brings her to her knees.

Next year if there are still kids with cancer, I'll make 10 blankets to add to your donation.

Will you remind me next year so I can either send you some money for supplies or make some myself? I would love to help. I hope 2010 is the year we can demolish cancer. This made me cry. Much love to you sweet Grandma J!

Grandma J. is simply unforgettable, and she's also incredibly thoughtful and generous, kind and considerate.

Those blanket look amazing. How do you do a "no sew" blanket? Because if it truly means you can make a blanket without sewing? I am all over it.

Those children and their mothers will never forget you, either.

Grandma J, you are sent from heaven. Such a wonderful thing to do. Here I am making gifts for people that don't need a thing (except for my MIL) and what I really should have been doing is something like you have done. You have inspired me to do more and better next year.
You are a Christmas angel!
I hope this Christmas is as good for you as you have made it for others!

I agree with all the previous comments. Could you post instructions on how to make these blankets? I'd be willing to try to make some for the cause too.

I just looked on the internet and found many instructions on how to make them. I'll try to get some fleece and make some. Would the hospital take them at different times of the year?

Oh Grandma J..... THANK YOU!! Last year, when I could blog, Cindy and I gave 3 cancer families $1,000 each from our fundraiser....thanks to generous people like you who helped us out. Postcard Cindy and I also went to Lucile Packard at Stanford and personally gave out gift cards for Toys R US and gas cards to parents. We also gave out blankets that she had knitted and things we had left from my craft fair. This year my surgery and lack of blog have left me unable to have a successful fundraiser....but it warms my heart to know that you made blankets :)

Next year I think you Postcard Cindy and I could do some serious donations...but I would prefer that you made that call and the childlife specialist said there were no kids in the cancer ward...that would be the best Christmas present of all :0)

Bless you Grandma J!

The pediatric cancer floor is not a fun place to be, especially on Christmas....Im glad you will be able to spread some cheer!

As you know, my kids give much of their birthday and Christmas presents to the cancer nurses, to pass out to kids who need some cheering up. Andrew's next appt. is in a few weeks, and we are going to make a couple blankets to give with our gifts.

We label our gifts; "from Andrew, a Survivor" or "from Christine (or Elise), sister of a Survivor" along with his website; www.caringbridge.org/ca/andrew We hope it brings hope to families to know that they can overcome this tough battles, and that they receive the true gift of Christ with our message.

We miss you, and cant wait to open up the big box you sent us!!
love,
kim
