SOUL MEN

I'm glad I chose this movie. I knew I would like it, because I loved the soul music of the 60's and 70's. Not just the music and singing, but the choreography and the flashy, polyester suits that was so popular with groups.

The film tells the story of two back-up singers from a popular R&B trio in the 1970s. When their lead singer went solo, and became extremely successful, the same wasn't true for Louis Hinds (Jackson) and Floyd Henderson (Mac). They go their separate ways, and lose contact until 20 years later when they are notified of the passing of their former successful partner.

Louis and Floyd have interpersonal issues and really can't stand each other, but one has a need to pay his respects and the other has a desire to cash in. The embark on a road trip from Los Angeles to New York.

The movie is very funny, and has several messages. The obscene language is a bit over the top, but then again it's two hard core, aging has-beens dealing with their own issues and each other.

They are asked to come together again in a tribute memorial celebration at the Apollo Theatre in New York.

there were only five people in the theatre, and we all laughed out loud often! It was especially touching with a sense of nostalgia generated by the movie's postscript affectionately acknowledging the passing of both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes.

I give this movie four gramophones out of five.

Sounds good to me. I also love the polyester from the 70's. You just can't get that same itchy feeling from cotton. go figure.
Glad you enjoyed it. Did you take Phillip with you?
You are such a great critic. Can't you get a job on the compound doing just this? Look into it, I bet they need someone like you and you can make a couple of bucks at the same time.

Great review. I do think you'd make a good movie critic. And a good stand-up comedienne. And a good blog-seminar instructor.

Hey...maybe we can line you up as a speaker for our Virginia Blog Fest (still in planning stage).....

We saw Madagascar 2, another Bernie Mac film.

Im only giving my movie a 3/5, because....I vacillated between falling asleep, trying to figure out just how the animals got to Africa, and chasing a "big girl" , bare bottomed, through the theater, while she screamed, because she does not want to wear pull ups (or diapers).

Some funny parts, potty humor, and boredom too.

RIP Bernie Mac.

Grandma J, you see more movies in one month than I've seen in the last 10 years. I think that retirement sounds grand!

I just read your column on Mother's cookies. I've loved those cookies since I was a wee tot. My brother in law worked for Archway at their headquarters in OH. Not only did he lose his job, but he got shafted on his last two paychecks and $3K in travel expenses (fronted on his personal credit card) incurred in travelling to Oakland to negotiate (unsuccessfully, obviously) with the union that wouldn't reduce any of their overblown wage and benefit demands. (Thanks, union, now the whole company loses - but I digress.) So, in the final analysis, I'm sad to lose Mother's cookies, but won't necessarily remember the Company too fondly after how they treated my BIL and his fellow employees.

I watched the bootleg of it online this afternoon. I should say I attempted to watch it. The cursing was too much for me and I'm usually okay with it. I couldn't figure out what they were saying for all the F this and F that's! I gave up. I'm glad you liked it though!
