The Reason For The Season

or, these are a few of my favorite things.

Thirty five years ago, I friend gave me a beautiful gift that she spent numerous hours making. I have cherished these pieces and love to display them....and display them I do......year 'round.

The details are spectacular and the picture doesn't do them justice. My friend said she was going to make me add-on pieces every year for Christmas...but I said no. I love the Holy Family and wanted to keep the Nativity simple, and so it is to this day. I move it to my coffee table for Christmas, but it's so beautiful, I display it all year.

My middle daughter knew how much I loved my three piece Nativity, and decided to get me a beautiful Austrian Crystal one when they were stationed in Germany ten years ago.

It's just as beautiful and lovely, and I display it year 'round, and put it front and center with the ceramic one for Christmas.

My third Nativity is my pewter, stained glass plate that my mother, Rita gave me. It has over two hundred different colors but it doesn't photograph well....but it's another of my favorite things.

Do you have a special gift from years gone by that you display front and center every Christmas?

Disclaimer....While these are some of my favorite things, the ornaments on my tree are on even par with my nativities.

I have a couple handblown non-traditional ornaments that I have to display front and centre every year, they even have names.

Well I did display every year until I moved in with two kids. Now they stay safely packed away. Maybe I will put a picture of them up on the blog.

Also, a wooden man that resemblesa goofy looking nutcracker/ballet dancer/russian soldier that has a string hanging in between its legs. You hang the man on a door knob and when you pull the string he does the splits.

I lived in a beautiful apartment building in downtown Milwaukee for a year and a half. One of my elderly neighbours, whose company I enjoyed immensely, had the wooden man hanging on her door knob. During one of the building's holiday cocktail parties I was telling her that I absolutely adored it.

The next morning when I went to work, it was hanging on my doorknob. A few weeks later she died.

Mat bought me the Willow Tree Angel nativity set over the course of our first two Christmases together. I have it set up on the table in our entry. It is one of my most precious Christmas (or ever) gifts because he knew how much I wanted a special nativity.

I know you asked us a question that we're supposed to answer, but I can't speak right now because my chin is on the ground at the absolute beauty of that plate that Rita gave you. The fact that it's from her makes me love it even more.

I love this!!! They are all beautiful. I have a large nativity set that my Mom collected over several years. She gave it to me. It is all white and I put it in my china cabinet so no cats, dogs, or kids can knock it over.

Okay you may not believe this but I have the same nativity set...with all the pieces that my mom painted years ago! It was all the rage to paint using your fingers back then! (I am sure there was enough toxin in the metalic paint to kill an elephant!) A friend even made a big wooden manger to go with the set but that is long gone with most of my mom's things...but since I took the nativity set long before my niece and nephew thrashed my mom's house and belongings, it is safe.

Thank you for all your help with our fundraiser this season...you're awesome! Happy Christmas and wishing you a joyous, happy HEALTHY New Year '09!

We have a large music box nativity that was given to us as a wedding gift. The back is a bible open to the Christmas story, and the shepherd boy winds up to play the music. I'll have to post a photo.....it was my absolute favorite wedding gift - hands down.

Your nativities are stunning....I'd really like to see the plate "in person".

Okay, Hula Hank made me cry. I love your plate. Too pretty. I can tell what it must look like if you say the picture doesn't do it justice. I love my photo ornaments from every year. Makes me smile when I hang them on my tree.

I have to agree with BHE on our nativity music box. We still have the original box that it came in as a gift ... still wrapped in gold paper.

I'm not a huge nativity person, but I really like the pewter and stained glass one--you're right, the colors are amazing.

I loved the plate when you posted about it before! So special! I don't have a nativity yet, and I need to get one. I will keep mine on display all year long also because I think that Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus is a beautiful picture that I want to always be in my thoughts! Merry Christmas, Grandma J! Merry, Merry Christmas!

I forgot to tell you that Quince walked down the stairs yesterday! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? He wants to come home for Christmas SO bad but he isn't going to be allowed. His family is coming over today and I wrapped up some bath and body works stuff for Andrea and put your name on it : ). You have been such an encouragement to them this year. I am so thankful for you! : ). I can't wait for them to see their presents!
